A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT AOC CÔTES
DU VENTOUX

The Biosphere reserve of the Mount Ventoux

Amazing open space, the Mount Ventoux was declared Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1990. This international label is a full recognition of the unique bio diversity, the historical and cultural wealth and also the human beings behaviour in total respect of those treasures. The aim of this reserve is to best reconcile the protection of the natural resources, of the landscapes and of the ecosystems as well as guaranteeing the development of human activities.

Two separate worlds live side by side, according to the exposure to the sun and the altitude: the Mediterranean world and the Alpine world. The reserve includes impressive forest with live oaks, white oaks, cedars, beeches, larches, pines and fir-trees… but also many rare species such as Silene Portensis, emblematic species such as «Pavot du Groenland» or endemic such as «Nivéole de Fabre» (Acis Fabrei).

Fauna is especially mixed, composed by many mammals (chamois, deer, roe deer…) that live freely overlooked by some magnificent birds of prey such as golden eagles and peregrine falcons.
