SAVOURS

Apricots
Orchards of apricot trees fill the fields as you pass the village of Le Barroux. Apricot trees go way back here, they were already grown in the 19th century, part of the multi-crop system. The apricot crop, traditionally non-irrigated, has expanded with varieties such as the «Polonais», called the «Orangé de Provence».

Saffron
The most precious spice in the world, saffron was grown intensely in this area until the 19th century, when the crop dwindled and disappeared. Today, saffron has been replanted here.

Gourmet stops
at the Beaumont-du-Ventoux cellar. The Beaumont-du-Ventoux cellar has published a brochure
selecting local restaurants which feature outstanding food and wine matches for Ventoux wines. This selection is also available from the Tourism Offices. It lists good restaurants between Sault and Malaucène.

Outstanding Good Taste Site
Beaumes-de-Venise has been awarded the label «site remarquable du goût», for its olive oil and its natural sweet wine, Muscat from Beaumes-de-Venise.

Olives
The saying has it that «where olive trees stop growing, there stops the Mediterranean area». Olive trees thrive all through the Côtes du Ventoux growing area. Vines and olive trees have been planted together since Roman times. Many olive varieties are grown, one of the best-known is the «Verdale» variety.
The olive harvest, known as «olivades» or «olivaison» takes place after the first frost, in November and December. Olive oils can be supple or pungent, powerful or light, and must be tasted and appreciated much as fine wine.

MARKETS

The Malaucène market, a true Provencal forum, takes place every Wednesday morning on the central streets and square. The market in Vaison-la-Romaine, held every Tuesday morning, is a festive, lively, colourful market.
