Candied Fruit
The candied fruit industry was born here, due to the presence of an agricultural area able to hold significant fruit production. At the end of the 19th century, many different varieties of fruit were grown on approximately 10,000 hectares: jujube, pomegranate, fig, peach, pear, apple, plum, apricot … Local clay was used to make the storage jars, called «basseles», which were terra cotta basins where the candied fruit was stored prior to being iced.
Lavender
The lavender crop started in the 2nd half of the 19th century, and reached a peak around 1920. True wild lavender thrives above 600 meters altitude, and up to 1600 m. |

True lavender flowers from June to late July, and is harvested and distilled from mid-July to late August.

Farmers’ markets
Throughout the summer and into autumn, farmers set up village markets and sell their produce directly – farm products, regional products, wines, lavender essence and other delights can be found.
Everything they sell has been sown, grown, tended and harvested by the farmers themselves.
The village of Coustellet started the first farmers’ market in 1982.
The name has since become a registered trademark by the Luberon Regional Natural Park.
The main markets take place in Apt (Tuesday morning) and Coustellet (Sunday morning). |
