On the way to the Sault plateau, a series of hill fields and lookout points take you from the fertile, irrigated plains of Provence to the more arid highlands of Provence, land of sweeping panoramas of the Comtat area.
THE COMTAT
TERRACES

WINE AND
RURAL
HERITAGE

The ancient presence of vines
Vineyards have been planted on this land since time immemorial.
Archaeological digs in Mazan have unearthed a Gallo-Roman site from the Augustan era, 40 BC, with wine storage amphorae, testifying to wine production at the time.

The Grangeons
Grangeons are small shelters built to shelter the farmer and his implements.

They can be seen throughout the landscape.
Grangeons which have survived to the present time are often enlarged and sometimes turned into small homes.

The sarcophagi in the Mazan cemetery
The Marquis de Sade held the first theatre festival in Provence in 1772 in Mazan, in a castle which has since become a hotel.
Another unusual feature of Mazan is the cemetery which overlooks the village.
Here 64 monolithic Paleo-Christian sarcophagi from the 5th and 6th centuries were found, near the Romanesque chapel Notre Dame de Pareloup.
You also have beautiful views from this high area.

The Mazan museum
The 17th century Penitents Blancs chapel is home to a historical and folk museum presenting various aspects of traditional rural life. See the tools, traditional clothing and the recreation of a farm kitchen from the late 19th century.
